Addressing the Rise in Homeless Encampments Requires Community Action

Updated: Feb 26

It shouldn’t come as any surprise the homelessness in Calgary is increasing.

In fact, there was a 50% rise in homeless encampment reports in 2022, reaching peak numbers in the summer months. A steady upward trajectory has been observed over the past five years.

The impact of these unauthorized living establishments has been disproportionately felt in communities near the city centre, with alarming numbers reported in specific neighbourhoods.

Disturbing Trends in the Heart of the City:

Communities near the centre of Calgary have witnessed a significant increase in homeless encampments. Bridgeland/Riverside lead the way with 234 reports in 2022.

Taking Immediate Action:

While ending homelessness is a long-term goal requiring sustained effort and investment, there are tangible ways individuals can make a difference now:

1.Acknowledge and Show Compassion.

Recognize that homelessness is a challenging and isolating experience. Treating encampment occupants with kindness can make a significant impact. A simple smile or a friendly greeting can go a long way in helping them feel seen and valued.

2. Donate or Volunteer.

Support organizations actively addressing homelessness, such as The Calgary Homeless Foundation, Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Society, Inn from the Cold, Awo Taan Healing Lodge Society, Be the Change YYC, Women in Need Society, and Leftovers Foundation. Contributions, whether in the form of time or resources, can make a meaningful difference.

3. Support Systemic Change.

Recognize that homelessness is a multifaceted issue requiring a comprehensive approach. Become an ally in supporting initiatives related to affordable housing, substance use, mental health, and income support. Advocating for systemic change is crucial in addressing the root causes of homelessness.
